According to a road test carried out by Norwegian motoring magazine, Motor.no, and the Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF), 29 EVs from leading manufacturers all exceeded their WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure) quoted ranges. The idea first emerged in the ImpactHub Istanbul, a social innovation centre in a city where a future earthquake is all but inevitable. The last time a devastating earthquake had struck Turkey was in 1999, around 150-200 kilometers from Istanbul. Official records put the death toll at 18,373 people. Scientists believe that the next one will be of a similar magnitude — but this time they expect it to be directly in Istanbul, the home of 15 million people....

He then turned the system into a public website, with a creativity dial that lets you adjust the randomness of the generated text, and a button that reduces the repetitiveness of the results....

Although it’s illegal to advertise job vacancies to a specific race, religion, or gender, research has proven time and time again that gendered words and phrases like “boastful” and “sympathetic” reinforce gender stereotypes, especially in the workplace. A team of social scientists argued that biased language in job ads sustain gender inequality. They coded a list of adjectives and verbs, labeling them as either feminine or masculine, then searched a popular job site using the gendered words....

The big problem is people. We suck at sorting, most of us don’t have access to proper bins and recycling services, and there’s just too much garbage for us to properly manage each day. We need help. Enter AI: There are few problems perfectly suited for robots, but digging through trash to ensure everything gets where it’s supposed to go is definitely one of them. A team of researchers participating in Huawei’s Cloud Garbage Classification Challenge created the aptly named GarbageNet, an AI platform for sorting different types of refuse....

A new website called How Normal Am I? aims to shed light on the risks by using algorithms to judge your age, attractiveness, BMI, life expectancy, and gender. Sharing your photo and all these sensitive inferences might appear a little reckless. But as the site promises to not collect any personal data or use any cookies, I naively gave it a go. After agreeing to the terms and conditions — which, of course, I read in great depth — I’m welcomed to the site by Tijmen Schep, the artist-in-residence at SHERPA, an EU-funded project that explores how AI impacts ethics and human rights....

The game is simple. Users create a monster character and profile, start swiping right or left on other monsters’ accounts, chat, and date. I created, Ian, a blue monster with questionable hair and it didn’t take long to match with Octiana, a Disney enthusiast, who eventually got my number. The longer I played, the more the game got to know my “monster preferences” — it showed my most and least recommended profiles and found a pattern and eventually I was left seeing the same monsters time and time again....

The system detects their intention to grip by using electromyography (EMT) to measure the electrical activity generated by a nerve’s stimulation of the muscle. An algorithm then converts the intent into force to help the wearer strengthen their grip on an object. The glove could help users with a wide range of daily tasks, from driving to opening jars....

Authorities noted Matthew Witters, of Seattle, was a leading seller of fentanyl on prolific dark web markets AlphaBay and Dream Market between 2015 and 2017. Witters was reportedly caught after his contact information and dark web nicknames were found in houses linked to drug trafficking in California and Oklahoma. Neil Walsh told Australia’s ABC the true scale of online child sexual abuse is much, much bigger than many realise, and that cryptocurrency — like Bitcoin — has added an additional layer of anonymity that favors perpetrators. “It’s what makes it really hard for cops [and] investigators to manage some really big risks. Because in the past, when we looked at some of those really big high threat areas, like kids getting abused online, it had to be paid for, and now with the use of cryptocurrencies, it’s exceptionally difficult for investigators to track and manage that risk,” Walsh told ABC....
